MAY

May always seems to be about transitions for me. It’s kind of the month equivalent of bracing yourself. June is when everything happens, really (end of the school year, graduations, weddings, etc), but May is right before you take the leap. My most memorable May was a few years ago when I was preparing to leave Atlanta for Ireland. There were so many emotions tangled up in that month: excitement, fear, uncertainty, longing,  determination. I made this mix as a sort of tribute to that time period, mixing a bit of Atlanta’s grittiness with the Euro pop of Ireland with a layer of antsy, dancey energy. Let’s begin.

April is full of misery. I’ve just actually realized this as I was putting this month’s mix together. April Fools Day, tax day, rainy days when you’re itching to get out of your raincoat but aren’t, yet, quite able to leave it behind. But April is also full of joy. It’s probably the month with the most birthdays of my friends than any other (aside from June and August). Clearly there’s something about April that draws me in. Since I’ve recently decided to start incorporating THE SECRET into my everyday life (not really, although I did decide to ‘believe’ like I had already won the Mega Millions lotto—didn’t work), I tried to make this mix very happy-go-lucky. But some of the typical “cruelest month” gloom still crept in anyway.

March is an odd month. It always manages to escape my attention when I’m remembering the year. It sits in a sandwich between winter and spring and there’s not much else to do with it. The biggest event of the month is St. Patrick’s Day, and there you go. But that is part of the beauty of March — there’s no pressure there to make it a big deal or a big event. It’s a month of fun and slightly warming temperatures. March is underrated.
